Clean, Sanitize, Disinfect… There is a difference!

Oct 06, 2020 By Joshua Cavalier

Health Canada, the CDC and the W.H.O. all share the guidance to Clean AND Disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks.

Clean, sanitize, and disinfect are often used in overlapping contexts but the general distinction is that "to clean" refers to scrubbing with soap and water, "sanitizing" kill germs and bacteria, whereas "disinfecting" kills more germs, bacteria and viruses.

If surfaces are dirty, clean them. Use detergent or soap and water prior to disinfection.

Then, use a disinfectant that has a DIN from Health Canada on the product label and is listed as a Disinfectants for Use Against SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) list.

It is important that the disinfectant be used according to the manufacturer’s instructions for dilution and dwell (contact) time. Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn appropriate to the product as listed on the products Safety Data Sheets (SDS).

Ask your Hazmasters or Conney Safety representative for help in choosing the right cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting products for your workplace.
